G'day Paul and All,
I was up Goschen way (Nth Vic) a few weeks ago. It is very dry and while
there are some interesting birds, such as Variegated F/wrens, Blue Bonnets
etc there are no migrants such as you may find in Spring. The weather is
great though, and a look here and Trescott West Reserve at Lake Boga and a
look over Round Lake just to the west of Lake Boga make a pleasant day's
birding.
White-winged Fairy-wrens are throughout the area, and are quite common.
Simply look for any open country with Dillon bushes or such like and you
will generally soon come across a family of those special little birds.
Chestnut-crowned Babblers were recently seen in the Terricks by Simon Starr,
but this colony are very shy and hard to see. There is a colony just over
the border along the Barham-Moulamein road which are a little more easy to
see, but that does not mean you will get to see them each time one goes
looking. If you are interested, let me know and I will tell you the area.
As Nevil Amos has pointed out, the majority of the area of Goschen is public
land. I was advised by Parks Vic in Kerang that it is administered by Parks
Victoria in Swan Hill. The area of the hall and tennis courts has been set
aside as a sports area, and while only the tennis courts remain, the open
area to the north east of the hall was apparently cleared some years ago and
used to be a football and cricket oval.
It seems Nevil has more specific information on the area. I appreciated the
info you gave too Nevil - thanks!
Regards,
Chris Coleborn
