Subject: Melanistic Silver Gull
Brenda Newbey reported a grey gull at Coogee Beach this morning (Sunday
21st March). I went there, located the gull and took a number of
digital photos. The bird is undoubtedly a melanistic Silver Gull,
but it was still good to see something a bit different.
Most white parts were a dusky grey, including the usual white windows in
the primaries. The tail and lower rump were the palest part of the
bird. The wing tips were black as they should be. The bill
and legs were dark.
I will put a photo or two on the Birds Australia WA web site
birdswa.iinet.net.au
in the next day or two; Click on
What Bird is This? near the top of the page.
