In the Gloucester area, we still have Dollarbirds
(heard yesterday Tuesday) and Channel-bills (heard Sunday) around but I haven't
heard or seen a Koel since there was a juvenile in my backyard on 5th February.
It appears to seem that Koels leave this area earlier than on the coast - from
my observations based on only two seasons, of course - not enough to set a trend
yet.
Last year the Koels (male, female and 2 juveniles)
spent a lot of time in my neighbour's figs during January to the beginning of
February and were totally absent from the same trees this year (lots of figs),
so that the Figbirds had the fruit almost to themselves. I was
away from 3rd - 22nd Feb 2003 and didn't see or hear a single Koel
until a female stopped briefly in my mulberry tree on 10th
April.
I'm keeping a sharp eye open for them- and ears
too. They ought to be still around.
