Hi all
Just returned from a day trip up to the Flinder's
River (North-west Qld) about 75k's North of Julia Creek and to local property
"Lara". The trip was pretty uneventful except for the ubiquitous
Black Kites, Brown Falcons, a
Black-breasted Buzzard and a Wedge-tailed
Eagle. The Flinders River was suprisingly
quiet with the odd Rufous-throated Honeyeater,
Apostlebird and Sacred
Kingfisher.
But the saddest part of the day was coming home and
I ran over an Oriental Plover. It was a dirt road and it
was sitting in the middle of the road - imagine a great big open plain of
grass, two wheel ruts and grass growing in between - that's how I ran over it -
just didnt see it at all till the last minute. I must have a penchant for
bird fatalities when I go out birding as in the past I've run over
Diamond and Peaceful Doves, Singing
Bushlarks, Crested Pigeons and Zebra
Finches - but up here they have a habit of sitting in the grass beside
roads and flying into the front of unsuspecting vehicles - I feel bad
sometimes.
Except yesterday, I was over the moon when I saw a
Grey Falcon on powerlines about 7k's East of Julia Creek on the
Flinder's Highway to Richmond. Been about 9 months since I saw my last one
in the region. It certainly made my day!
Cheers
