Chris Lester, Rohan Clarke et al., in Tasmania for
two pelagics, report that today, Sunday 22 Feb., they photographed a Penguin in
heavy moult at the foot of the cliffs at The Blow Hole at Eaglehawk Neck,
Tasmania. To access the shore it is necessary to climb down a rope. Those
involved will not return home till Tuesday. In the meantime, it is suggested
that persons interested in locating the bird contact John Males of Pauletta
Charters on (03) 6248 9432. It was his children that found the bird yesterday.
The bird is in such heavy moult that with the texts immediately available,
they are uncertain as to its identity but believe it is either a Fiordland or
Snares Crested Penguin.
So now you twitchers that need a new Penguin have a
decision to make. Go for that one, which should be there for a while, or if
you're very quick, go for the King Penguin at Port MacDonnell in SA which
has nearly finished its moult!
Incidentally, just for the the record, there was a
very sick Fiordland picked up near Apollo Bay, Victoria in October last
year and placed in care at the Penguin Parade at Phillip
Island.
