My apologies for any incorrect information contained in my previous email.. I mis-read the article, and it only stated that the activity is legal in these states. I interpreted this initially as legal for 2004 in context of the article. I can confirm that the 2004 duck shooting season was announced to be opened in Victoria on March 20th for 8 weeks. Your concerns to other states Environment Ministers are now even more timely to avoid other states following Victoria's lead.
Peter Fullers report on duck shooting was not completely correct. In Queensland duck "Harvesting" seasons are declared at he discretion of the minister who acts on the advice of his advisors and his advisory committee. Birds Queensland has a member on that committee. There was no declared season in 2003 because of drought conditions and smaller numbers of ducks. The committee have not met to discuss a 2004 season. Birds Queensland have made submissions to the minister that no season be declared until duck numbers exceed those of pre-drought times. We have also made submissions to the minister to permanently close Queensland to duck "harvesting" There is a trend in Qld for less persons each year applying and obtaining a duck shooting license. Like Peter F we are not happy to see any duck shooting and are attempting to see it come to an end.
