Hon. John Hill,.
Minister for Environment
South Australia
Dear Sir
I have been informed today that you are intending to permit a duck
shooting season this year. You are probably aware that wild duck
populations are currently very low due to the recent drought.
Furthermore, recent rains in the north of SA have triggered a breeding
response from many water birds including ducks and these birds are
particularly vulnerable while brooding and raising young. Because of
projected flooding, birds will be engaged in breeding for most of this
year.
You may have been poorly advised about this matter if you have decided
to open the duck shooting season this year and i appeal to your better
judgement to reverse any such decision. Further I respectfully
request your consideration to place a permanent ban on duck shooting in
South Australia.
I would be happy to discuss this matter further with you and to assist
with advice regarding an appropriate policy for the permanent protection
of ducks in South Australia.
Yours truly
Ian May
