Hi Chris,
Danny Rogers presented a wonderfully researched paper on just that subject
at the recent Australasian Shorebird Conference in Canberra. In time there
will be a publication of full papers. In the meantime, contact Danny at
 - I don't know if Danny is a subscriber at present, as
I have only just rejoined myself after several months.

Danny showed why the two are different species, but though I don't recall
the official status, I doubt that they are as yet officially separated.

Cheers,

Jill
