Hi Tom
I was fascinated by your report on Lady Elliot Island....what is the main
breeding period for the island and for the Great Barrier Reef area in
general.....I would be keen to visit when most birds are in their optimum
plumage
Regards
Brendan

Subject: [OB] Lady Elliot Island Trip-Report

Hi All,
This must be the briefest birding trip-report ever seen on the 'net,
Marie and I flew over to Lady Elliot Island at the southernmost part of
the Great Barrier Reef on Friday 12 and we returned the following day.
Although we only saw about 23 species of birds most species were
breeding and very 'digiscope-able', the hi-lights being Red-tailed
Tropicbirds (the easiest nesting-rarity that I've ever seen.....about 2m
from the resort-accomodation!) Roseate Terns (most young fully-fledged)
and thousands of nesting Common & Black Noddies. Bridled Terns were
nesting in doorways and Buff-banded Rails scavenged around the
swimming-pool in broad-daylight. Two species of frigatebird could be
seen soaring over the island most of the duration. It was so exciting
we didn't even have time for snorkelling.
I've put a quick report together with a trip-list on
http://www.aviceda.org/lei/lei.htm
Hope you enjoy it......please send any comments!
