Dear All,
The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council is conducting an
investigation into the use of public land in the Otways region of southern
Victoria. The Victorian State government has decided to phase out logging
in this area and has asked VEAC to investigate the development of a single
National Park to include some (or all) of the state forest that constitutes
are large portion of this region. To this end VEAC has produced a
Discussion Paper to inform the community about issues and approaches
associated with public land use planning for a single National Park in the
Otways. VEAC are now calling for relevant submissions from interested
people and organisations in this regard. The closing date for written
submissions on the Discussion Paper is 5 December 2003.
This is an exceedingly valuable part of Victoria in terms of biodiversity
and provides habitat for some rare, restricted range or endangered species
including Powerful Owl, Masked Owl, Rufous Bristlebird, Ground Parrot,
Southern Emu-wren and mammals such Spotted-tailed Quoll and Smoky Mouse,
amongst others.
Anyone interested in the conservation of this area and the creation of a
world class National Park close to Melbourne can obtain more information
from the VEAC website, http://www.veac.vic.gov.au/
Submissions should be directed to:
Chief Executive Officer
Victorian Environmental Assessment Council
Level 3, 250 Victoria Parade
East Melbourne Vic 3002
Or via e-mail: or Fax 9412 5153
Regards
Stuart Dashper
