A question for Townsville birdos regarding cryptic garden crakes. Whilst staying in Townsville before heading out to Paluma the house garden (below Castle Hill) had a number of new birds for me. Most were eventually identified but a crake of some sort had me mystified. It started calling late in the day and never showed itself. The call was a 'ik. ik, ik..' or similar, was often responded to by a nearby bird of the same species and reminded me of the crake calls I've heard in Victorian wetlands. The house garden had dense small shrubs and was adjacent to a salt water pool. Any thoughts on the likely species?
