Greetings,
With many of the small fruited
Lauraceae, Elaeocarpaceae and figs in full fruit the fruit pigeons and
other fructivores are having a great time at the moment. All the fruit pigeons
have been showing well at Lake Eacham. Some people drove up in a hire car the
other day and got nine lifers before they shut the car doors:- Wompoo and
Superb Fruit Doves, Tooth-billed and Spotted Catbird in one tree, Double-eyed
Fig-Parrot, Barred Cuckoo-Shrike, Bridled and Macleay's Honeyeaters in another
and Grey-headed Robins on the ground.
Waders seem to be coming and going from Tinaburra
on a daily basis. This evening there were at least 27 Whiskered Terns near the
boat ramp. No Greenshanks (3 on Wednesday) or Black-tailed Godwits ( 15 ) were
present this evening. Plenty of Sharptailed Sandpipers and a few Pratincoles ( 1
on Wed.).
The well known Golden Bowerbird at Longlands Gap is
putting on a show for most visitors. Blue-faced Parrot-Finches are around but
proving rather elusive at the moment. As more Brachiaria comes into
seed they should become easier to see.
There are a couple of young Spotted Harriers around
the Lake Eacham area which will cause a bit of excitement as they are some of
the pale young which prove very confusing. Dark tail ( banding not always
obvious) and pale face give them away.
