Hello all,

Yesterday afternoon while in the Jerliderie area I visited the Wangamong
Creek west of Jerilderie where it passes under the Conargo-Jerliderie Road.
A site always good for waterbirds/waders. Yesterdays visit produced 11
Latham's Snipe, Red-kneed Dotterel, Black-fronted Dotterel, Red-capped
Plover and a Aust. Spotted Crake as well as other typical waterbirds. Got
great views of the Snipe feeding along the edge fo the water, and the Crake
came out in the open within 5 metres of where I was standing.

I also visited the Jerliderie Sewerage Works and came across the strangest
duck. I still can't work it out, and no book has anything like it. My
description has it as being the size of a Black Duck/Hardhead size, its head
and neck was dark like that of a Hardhead, the body like that of a Black
Duck, but didn't have the green/purple speculum. Under the tail was white.
On its right hand (wing) side a very obvious, neatly edged, white window ran
the length of the mid body section and was quite wide, however the bird did
not have this on the left hand side. The bill was plain, with no marking.
The bird was swimming on its own, however both Hardhead and Black Duck were
in the pond near it.

If anyone can put me straight on the duck I'd be interested.

Cheers
David
