The Boondall Wetlands lacks paddocks of dry grassland suitable for grassowl.
This species is rare in Brisbane and if you were extremely lucky, could be seen
flying over a patch of grassland on the eastern fringe off the Nudgee Golf
Course and occasionally reported over the Airport and Freeway nearby.
Then the Council locked the gates and since then no reports of the owls. So I
imagine they have moved on. Recently the gates have been opened and a biketrack
is being constructed through the grass and 8.6 km to Toombul.
Will it now be burnt regularily and not be a hunting area for the owl if it
returns. The only good thing is that the track may make the lagoons next to the
Toombul Rd exit accessable, occasional visits by Red-necked Avacot are a
highlight.
Golf Club interesting birds are Re-rumped Parrots,Eastern Rosella and nesting
White-breasted Woodswallows.
