They seem to pass through Sydney in the Mar - Apr period, apparently
in small numbers, and one assumes also in Spring. Small numbers of
dead and injured birds (window kills) are found in some (most?)
years. This is particularly so in Sydney's northern suburbs. They
presumably travel to and from the remnant rainforest patches on the
NSW south coast

Re the range of this species, Pizzey states that they come down the
east coast to about Moruya but have turned up in Tassie. I note
that Frith in his book, Pigeons and Doves of Australia, acknowledges
that birds have been recorded reliably down to Vic and Tassie, but
he calls birds south of about Rockhampton "vagrants" (unmethodical
wanderers?). Is that a correct description? They seem to have a
set migration pattern here in Noosa - heading south around Sep/Oct
and back north Mar/April. I assume they breed up north and that
there is some form of southerly migration.
Can anyone comment on this? I don't have access to HANZAB. Perhaps
Alan Morris can enlighten us about how common the birds are in NSW?
Frith also suggests that they don't compete for food much with the
rose-crowned fruit-dove, that they will come down lower for vines
etc. Does anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks for any info
Andrew
