We found the decapitated body of a Fan-tailed Cuckoo (adult) on our =
driveway during the week.No sign of the lost head, no signs of =
trauma/attack/feeding on the body.As it was found below clear windows
in =
a room with clear windows on the other side, I surmise it pranged into =
the glass and was either killed on impact, on concussed.
I'm interested to know which predator/animal would then have =
removed the head and left the rest?Would pied Currawong, magpie, or =
butcherbirds have behaved in this way? Surely the cuckoo would not be =
laying in their nests. Perhaps an opportunistic lace monitor?
I would be interested in people's views about the head hunter.
A storm during the week has caused us to lose the top 10 metres of a =
magnificent euc. grandis (flooded or rose gum) on our property. On =
inspection, the fallen part was riddled with large hollows, both in the
=
trunk and branches, and explains why the top of the tree was always a =
hive of activity, not only with birds checking out potential nest
sites, =
but also with goannas, possums and gliders. There was always something =
going-on.

We have finally welcomed back a solitary drongo, and a pair of =
Dollarbirds, along with Sacred Kingfisher, Spectacled and Black-faced =
Monarch. No Koel or channel-billed as yet, though we did hear a koel at
=
Toorbul on a QWSG outing a couple of weeks ago.
