Hi All,

In relation to David Geering's comments on White Ibis we are having major problems with this ibis at Booragoon Lake in suburban Perth.

Up until two years ago this lake was the only location at Perth where a breeding colony of about fifty pairs of Great Cormorants bred. Thanks to the invading ibis that now breed in their hundreds (and lower water levels possibly caused by the mainly under regulated and over useage of underground water) these cormorants were forced from the lake. (Luckily they are now breeding on a dormant dredging barge at Herdsman Lake).

In addition for a long time, the lake also supported very large numbers (hundreds) of breeding Little Black Cormorants but they too are now in decline due to the ibis expansion. As the expansion will lead to further cormorant reductions, it will be necessary to control the ibis numbers as Booragoon Lake appears to be the only breeding location for the little blacks in Perth.

If the ibis are not controlled,  it will only be a matter of time before the little blacks are forced out completely.

Best Regards  Wynton Maddeford
