Margaret,

Not only do the black and white brigade (feathered only) do well in human inhabited areas, people feed them! This proves that they are nice people but the effect on small birds is easily noticeable. Supplementary feeding enables higher numbers to survive the hard times when there are not a lot of bowls of fresh meat sitting around in trees.

So far this season Lewins Honeyeater and Brown Gerrygone have breed successfully in my garden while Scarlet H'e., Fairy Gerrygone, Magpie Lark, Leaden Flycatcher and Rufous Whistler have all come to nothing. The population of Emerald Doves is down to one so I don't hold out much hope of success there either.

I have had little luck in having my neighbors control their cats or in desisting from feeding predators. If you want to encourage predators, encourage their prey first.

Regards,
Alan
