FNQ Wildlife Week 2003 (Mostly Birds on Saturday and Sunday)
Following on from Allan Gillander's note about this subject a week or
more ago, this is a further reminder about the Wildlife Week which
commences on Saturday (tomorow - 20th). Saturday and Sunday (especially
Sunday) concentrates on birds and birding with several guest speakers
giving talks through the day on Sunday. There will be many displays and
stalls and most of the local birding identities will be in attendence.
It is a great opportunity for anyone travelling through this area to
meet some of the local birding people and a great opportunity for any
local people interested in birds to meet people with a similar interest.
Saturday and Sunday look like being two big days.
Last year, an initial Far NQ Bird Day was held at the Mareeba Wetlands
in September which proved very successful. This year, following that
success Tropical Tableland Tourism has got behind it to make a wildlife
week out of it. Various wildlife tours and activities follow through the
next week.
The venue is Mareeba Wetlands (plenty of parking). Mareeba is about 1
hour north of Cairns (North Queensland) on the northern inland route
(Kennedy Highway) - Mareeba Wetlands is about 8 km north of Mareeba off
the Peninsula Development Road (towards Cape York) - turn left at
Biboorha - the Wetlands is well sign posted.

It promises to be a great weekend. The weather will be beautifully fine,
sunny and warm - definitely no rain (we are in the middle of our dry
season). The Week commences officially tonight (Friday) with a Dinner at
the Wetlands with Prof. David Bellamy OBE as special guest.
