Hi All,
Sydney birders wishing to see Pilotbirds or hoping to
put them on their Cumberland list should consider a visit to Lady Carrington
Drive in the Royal National Park.
Bob Way and I spent a couple of hours there yesterday
(Friday) afternoon and saw Pilotbirds at two locations and heard one call at a
third. We also saw Rockwarblers at two locations between the gate preventing
vehicle entry at the north end of the drive and Jersey Springs.
The first P/b site was in a gully ~200 to 300M. past the
rock overhang, this gully is marked with a Gymea Lilly with 3 blossoms and a
large pink angophora. Also the high side culvert has a concrete (rather than
stone) parapet. We heard a bird call here. The second site is the next
gully south and is a known P/b site, we saw a bird here. The third site is about
2.5 to 3 K. in from the gate at Jersey Springs where we also watched a bird
feeding between the track and the river. Jersey Springs is marked by carved
stone water troughs engraved "Jersey Springs" on the side of the track away from
the river.Jersey Springs is also a known site.
We saw the birds in the quiet of the afternoon, early
morning when they are actively feeding would be better. Knowing the call would
be a great help. Now is a good time because wildfire, high winds and winter
dieback has left the undergrowth fairly open and the birds easier to
see.
