Peter Ewin raised an issue I was going to raise myself. In lots of cases it's comparing apples with oranges. Just how large an area are we talking about. Someone suggested Cape York - a mighty big area. Compare this with the Capertee Valley - something like 40 km by 20 km with 240 species accepted on my checklist of the valley's birds. Even the suggested 2 hours from Griffith (generally quite acceptable) is a lot different from the Capertee Valley where the entire valley can be accessed within 30 minutes from the location where I stay when in the valley with most of the better birding spots being 15 minutes or less away. I'll be posting something about my weekend in the valley leading a Cumberland Bird Observers Club outing later today or tomorrow (when I get time).
