I spent a very pleasant, though extremely cold weekend helping my brother
remove
Bridal Creeper from his property on Lake Ada on Kangaroo Island.
Many rewards for the labour though, including numerous Scarlet Robins and Grey
Fantails following us as we worked. But the highlight was 3 Fantail Cuckoos
allowing
us close enough for photos.
The Superb Fairy Wrens were active and the males in spectacular colour. Also
quite a
few Striated Thornbills in the eucalypts.
A Masked Lapwing was sitting on 3 eggs on the edge of the dam and we saw one
with
a chick on the side of the road as we entered American River.
Australasian Shelduck flew over us on several occasions and we saw many of
these
on the dams and in paddocks on the island.
On the lake itself were quite a few Musk Duck, the Shelducks and Swans. There
were
other birds but they were too far out to identify.
A quick trip in to Duck Lagoon near Cygnet River yesterday and we found a
couple of
dozen Freckled Duck roosting along the bank.
Pity about the rough trip back last night!
Cheers
