G'day all
Rob Farnes and I went Skua hunting on Saturday. Rob had been seeing Great
Skuas along the coast from Portland Harbour to Cape Nelson recently and I
was in need of a lifer.
We looked in the harbour without success (a pod of dolphins was a great
sighting however). The Gannet colony at Point Danger was off limits
because the gun club was shooting nearby. A dark speck among the Gannets
on Lawrence Rocks was probably a Great Skua. All the Gannets were
collecting seaweed for their nests by the way.
Success came when we searched from the clifftops at Cape Nelson. Two Great
Skuas were seen reasonably close - might have been one bird seen twice.
Other good sightings from the cliffs were lack-browed, Yellow-nosed and Shy
Albatrosses and a Little Penguin that sat on the water for ages, preening
itself. Rufous Bristlebirds were calling in the dense scrub behind the
cliffs.
Cheers
