Just another little oddity:

Part of the Reedy Lake/Lake Connewarre system is called Hospital Swamp.

This was apparantly named as such since shooters said that the place looked like a hospital for wounded birds during the duck shooting season.

What an inspirational name we have been left with!!!

[BIRDING-AUS] Possible Threats to Reedy Lake, Leopold Victoria

Many Victorians  may be familiar with the most popular access point to Reedy Lake at Leopold near Geelong; Moolap Station Rd.

The land along the right hand side of Moolap Station Rd and adjoining Reedy Lake(105 acres i believe) is currently for sale. The land has a  rural zoning, and hopefully no impact will be felt by the Reedy Lake system. However, there seems to be a number of developments that could have a potential impact on Reedy Lake.

I reported the plans for a major shopping centre in the Reedy Lake catchment area  last year, but i haven't heard anymore about these proposals.

It worries me every time i drive down to Reedy Lake, that it is called a Game Reserve, when it is such a significant conservational area. (not to mention the population increase in the area, that encourages kids to venture into the swamp, while duck shooters wander around with guns).

What are the necessary requirements for a "conservational reserve" or "nature reserve". Reedy Lake has significant plant, animal and bird life, including a refuge for Orange Bellied Parrots. Shouldn't this qualify the area for stricter conservational legislation?
