I also agree with the birds locking talons in
mid air, as they do that and plummeted to their death. The blood from the beaks
can also mean they may have suffered internal injuries from the
fall.
I have seen Crimson Rosellas here having a very
furious fight in mid air and falling to the ground, usually by the time they
fall they aren't too far off from the ground. As it is coming up to breeding
season, a lot of birds are nesting and looking in hollows earlier than usual
this year. In my area they seem to be, on the Mid South Coast of
NSW.
