Following on from the good news about the Ningaloo reef...
Is everyone aware that public submissions are called for commenting on the
proposed re-zoning of the entire Great Barrier Reef Marine Park?
You can make your submission online or request a form that you can
fill out by hand.

is where to make a submssion. The deadline for submissions is 4th Aug.
I have a mailout (as do no doubt many of you) describing the action
endorsed by
WWF Australia, Aust. Conservation Found., plus 10 other Australian
conservation bodies.
I have typed out their proposed comments which you can either copy and
paste into the online submission's Q7 or EVEN BETTER you can express
your opinions in your own words.
The anti-seafood eating brigade amongst us may prefer to ban prawn-fishing
altogether but I pass on the WWF etc suggestions as received.

Overall level of protection for the Marine Park -
1) Around 50% of the Marine Park should be zoned "green"
2) A core "pink" zone should be established in every one of the 70
biological regions in the Marine Park.
Comments about specific areas within the Marine Park -
1) All Dugong Protection Areas should be zoned either "green" or "yellow",
depending on their proximity to towns and cities.
2) The whole of Princess Charlotte Bay off Cape York Peninsula should be
zoned "green" to protect the Bay's dugongs, turtles and inshore dolphins.
3) The Hinchinbrook Island region needs increased protection - the eastern
side of the Island, Rockingham Bay and Missionary Bay should be zoned
"green".
Comments regarding uses or activities allowed in the different zones in the
Marine Park -
1) Trawling is not an appropriate use in a World Heritage Area. GBRMPA
should set a phase-out date for trawling in the Marine Park, with an
appropriate social-economic package. Research into alternative prawn
capture methods should be a priority.
2) Current spear-fishing rules should not be relaxed.
3) Intensive aqua-culture should not be permitted in any zones of the
Marine Park.
