Hi everyone
Robin Murray and I visited the Dubbo area for 3 days 23-25 May 03. See my
separate email on Goonoo State Forest.
Some other niceties for the weekend were:
The discovery of Borenore Caves at S 33° 15.322' E 148°56.107' which had a
terrific picnic area and then walking around, and
you can explore the caves yourself. Lovely tall trees, some pools of water and
a great oasis in an otherwise agricultural
area. Saw here White-naped Honeyeater, White-plumed Honeyeater, White-browed
Scrubwren, Crimson Rosellas and nearby, 2
Wedge-tailed Eagles with 1 holding a sizeable furry lunch in its talons.
Ophir and nearby Summer Hill Creek at S 33° 09.924' E 149°14.348'. The creek
was quite sizeable, with massive sheoaks and
some nice picnic areas and toilets. 2 White-browed Scrubwrens were getting
themselves thoroughly soaked as they bathed, male
and female Golden Whistlers, Red-browed Finches and 2 Jacky Winters. It has
been so long since I've since Jacky Winters and
unfortunately it appears that the family that was at Yaralla Hospital in
Concord has now disappeared so it was certainly nice
to see them at Ophir.
Burrendong Arboretum was a riot of screeching as Musk Lorikeets were foraging
on the flowering gum.
Cumnock S 32° 55.143' E 148°45.248' had 8 Black-faced Cuckoo-Shrikes - 7 of
which were immatures!! Red-rumped Parrots in
this area, plus 3 Brown Falcons, Pied Butcherbirds and Straw-necked Ibis.
Orchid nuts out there: the Yeoval area was good for the hairy leaves of
Caladenia, Pterostylis rosettes and Calochilus
leaves - looks like it will be a good spring around there.
