Thanks to all who replied.

Most replies stated that Mt. Wellington (Ferntree) is worth persisting
with;  I'll certainly try there again since it is the closest site to
Hobart, and at a pinch I can get there with public transport. The other suggestion was the Rainforest Walk carpark on the Wielangta Forest Drive.
