Brimin area and Robins everywhere..

Hi all,

 

Spent some of the Queen's Birthday weekend camping along the Murray River at Taylors Bend at Brimin, half way between Yarrawonga and Rutherglen in north-eastern Victoria (36 02, 146 17). Over 70 species were recorded with some of the more interesting sightings detailed below.

 

Flame Robins, over 30 in a flock were seen feeding in paddocks along the river. A pair of Scarlet Robins were also seen with this group. Around a small Cypress-pine woodland nearby a Red-capped Robin pair was sighted along with a Jacky Winter. A pair of Grey-crowned Babblers  and Chstnut-rumped Thornbills were also seen by this woodland.

 

 Most birds observed were seen in winter feeding flocks. The largest contained the following species, Crimson Rosella (Yellow and Crimson race), Red-browed Finch, Superb Fairy-wren, Brown Treecreeper, Weebill, Yellow, Striated and Brown Thornbills, Rose Robin, Grey Fantail, White-naped Honeyeater and Silvereye, Golden Whistler, Grey Shrike-thrush, Spotted and Striated Pardalotes. It was a magnificent sight to watch all these species together around a dry billabong early in the morning, with the fog clearing and dew on the ground.

  

As I was able to approach some Striated Pardalotes closely and noticed some were of the migrant Tasmanian race.

 

Spotlighting at night did not uncover any birdlife but many Brush-tailed Possums. Heard passing overhead at night though were numbers of Pink-eared Ducks and Black Swans.
