We too have recently spent 2 days birding at Bowra. We would support Grev
and Margaret Riedy in regard to Slaty-backed Thornbills. We have been
fortunate to see them on a number of occasions in central Aust., most
recently after the BA campout to Newhaven last year. We had originally seen
them not too far from Bowra in 1975 in the company of Barry and Jo Morgan,
Ivan and Sandra Reynolds, Col and Ali Lloyd, et al. All of us early QOS
members. At the time they were seen near Thargomindah, but I doubt they were
ever recorded publicly as we were not 100% sure of our sighting, [which at
that time was a bit heretical]. This time however we are very sure of our
sighting. Unfortunately Tom, I can not supply photographic proof. However
the eye colour and facial markings in our opinion fitted Slaty-backs not
Chestnut-rumps and certainly not inlands.
We were doing a quick recky of Bowra prior to a more extended trip in the
spring, which we have already booked. Bowra is all everyone has ever written
about it from a birding point of view. Although very dry the scope of
birding is excellent. We tallied 78 species in our 2 days. It is interesting
to note however we happened to strike very hot unseasonable weather and our
sightings differed markedly to Grev and Margaret who we overlapped on the
last days they were there. For our part we did not find the Halls Babblers
[which we had seen several times before], we did not find Splendid wrens as
Allan Morris and Rob Benson did, however we did find full colour Variegated
wrens.
It is interesting; we have met Grev and Margaret Riedy over a period of 28
years in rather odd places like Opalton, Tunnel Creek, The Abrolhos and now
Bowra, who knows where next!!
