Hi all,
In response to the email asking if South Australia has Container Deposit Legislation - the answer is Yes. The legislation, allowing drink containers to be returned for a five cent deposit, has been in place for about 30 years. Initially it covered a range of other smaller drink containers. This range was expanded by 900 types of containers from January the 1st 2003 to include flavoured milk cartons, some larger plastic drink containers, more glass alcohol bottles and lots of litte containers like juice poppers. The containers covered by the original CDL system have a return rate of around 90% and are virtually absent from roadside litter. The expanded CDL has already resulted in about 30% of the new containers coming out of the wastestream. The decision to expand it was based on an analysis of which containers were ending up as litter and which ones were getting into the waste stream (and thus not being recycled). For instance, about 45% of all containers in the wastestream in SA were small cartons of Iced Coffee flavoured milk which are particularly popular here. This resulted in them being added to CDL. Depending on the success of the expansion the Government may look at adding other containers which don't contain drinks... such as household cleaning products.
Nick
