Hullo Graham,
                     Lead pellets that miss their target fall into the mud
on the bottom of wetlands and are ingested by bottom-feeding birds, thus the
worry re toxicity, the lead can eventually kill them. Steel pellets are now
widely used in North America, they aren't toxic.
