For the information of list members, I have just received the following
advice which is from our 'Game and Wildlife Licensing Unit' here in East
Melbourne.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Victoria, all wildlife is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975,
including dead wildlife (eg. road-kills) and any parts thereof (bones,
teeth, fur, feathers, eggs etc). Possession of any wildlife (live or dead)
by any person is illegal unless that person has written permission to
possess wildlife (usually in the form of a licence or permit in their own
name) or unless that person is formally exempt from such requirements under
legislation.
Road-kills, for example, should not be collected by members of the public,
as permission to retain it is not usually granted.
Likewise, there is nothing in the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 that
permits anyone to collect dead wildlife, including roadkills. Unless they
have an authorisation allowing the collection of roadkills, it would not be
permitted.
