Hello all,
I spent the weekend birdwatching in between showers of rain between Rankins
Springs and Mt Hope in central west NSW. The general terrain is starting to
look much healthier than it has for quite a while thanks to the rain. Bird
activity is still a little low overall.
Highlights included:
Round Hill NR- Red-lored Whistler, Gilberts Whistler, Southern Scrub-robin
and Shy Heathwren. Of these Shy Heathwrens were by far the most vocal.
Nombinnie NR- Southern Scrub-robin, Grey-crowned Babbler and Shy Heathwren.
Jimberoo SF- Glossy Black-cockatoo and Shy Heathwren.
The Shy Heathwrens were probably what interested me most. They were very
vocal and I got recordings in a couple of spots. It never fails to amaze me
how variable their singing is. It almost seems as though no two birds give
the same song. I know that this isn't the case though as late this
afternoon in Jimberoo SF I listened to two heathwrens competing with each
other. They were both giving the same basic song (one I hadn't heard before
mind you) but with different mimicry at the end. One was adding Silvereye
song while the other was adding Inland Thornbill song.
Cheers
