Hi all
Isn't this always the way ... my wife, who is usually tolerant about my
passion for birds, and who mainly likes Flamingos, Puffins, Birds of
Prey, and Penguins, just called me from her mobile phone. She wanted to
describe an "unusual green parrot" that she saw on the grass just
outside the large ornamental gates at Geelong Grammar - between the
school and the little swamp beside Corio Bay. She described it as
being bright green with yellow underparts, darker yellow or orange
lower down, and with a bit of blue in the wing and on the head. She
was able to confirm these features because she was watching it move
around on the grass while she talked to me!
Gee, I wonder what that could be?
If it's what I think, it will be the third record for this strip of
road (Foreshore Rd, which runs from Shell refinery down to Corio Bay
Yacht Club) in about two years. Orange-bellied Parrots used to be
recorded near here - on the saltmarsh at the end of Limeburners Lagoon
- basically about 1 km upstream from the Yacht Club. There have not
been any records from this site for ten or more years. If OBP, I
wonder if it was moving between feeding grounds? Are they recorded
from the Avalon Beach area? This is only about 1-2 Km away, with some
possible suitable habitat in between.
Unfortunately, I don't think it will stick around for another hour or
so till I get home. It would have been a nice addition to my backyard
list - though I guess it still counts for the 'home' list if someone
else in the family saw it?
