Dear all,
Yesterday morning, Andrew Silcocks and I made the journey west through the
fog to look for the Oriental Pratincoles at the WTP, as reported by many
people on this list. It was great find initially by Michael and Will, well
done!
Using the well-described directions posted on birding-aus, we located the
Pratincoles almost immediately. Two wonderful birds looking very cold
crouching in the red weed. It was my 499 th lifer! While we were watching
the Pratincoles through our scopes, eagle-eye Andrew spotted a small wader
feeding behind them in the vegetation. Obviously, good fortune was with us
- the wader was identified as a Long-toed Stint! Yes, another lifer - bird
500! We watched the stint and prats for about 5 minutes before the stint
flew to the north-west. After a brief search, it could not be relocated
but if anyone is out there this weekend, keep your eyes peeled because you
might be pleasantly rewarded with two rare wader sightings.
