Hi Netters,

Allan Richards loaned me his double video “Wild Africa”, produced 2003 by the BBC Worldwide Ltd. At the start of episode 4, “coasts”, the narrator Fergal Keane states “Africa is an island”. After doing some research, questions for the experts please? Answers from Africans on Birding Aus welcome.

Question (1) Is this statement true?

                               (2) If so, is it due to the building of the Suez Canal, joining the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea?

The “Field Guide to the Birds of the Middle East” by R F Porter, 1996, has a map showing the start of the “Middle East” at the Egyptian border with Israel. In the Readers Digest “Atlas of the World” printed 1992, Africa is shown in Egypt to start from the western side of the Suez Canal with the Sinai Peninsula on the eastern side of the Suez Canal as the start of the Middle East.

                                (3) Is the Sinai part of Africa or the Middle East?

All the Best
