For the week ending: 30 March 2003


The sighting form has suddenly stopped working and Primus are unable or unwilling or too incompetent to help.  I think I have found all the
sightings that were sent, however if I have missed anything could you please send it on to me again and do not be discouraged if occasionally some
sightings go astray.  The full story of Primus' unhelpfulness is on the Report a Sighting page.  In the meantime keep sending in those reports of Swifties!

Late March
A flock of 60 Magpie Geese on a wetland near Lake Yambuk, west of Port Fairy, thanks Jack Krohn.

29 March
7 Swift Parrots, feeding in flowering grey box in the Brynterion State Forest 13 kms South of Rupanyup latitude 36.44.06 longitude 142.37.10, thanks Ian 
Morgan.

29 March
Seen amongst the fog and heavy rain (!) we had good sightings of several pairs of Pink Robins and an Olive Whistler along the sides of the walking track at Beachamp Falls, Beech Forest, thanks Ian Davies.

28 March
A very large flock (for Melbourne) of about 70-100 Long-billed Corellas, flying over Ashburton, thanks Greg Oakley.

26 March
An adult Emerald Dove feeding on the side of a sandy 4WD track. Approached to within 7 - 10 metres before it quietly moved ahead of us while continuing to feed from seeds on the track. The sighting occurs within a closed canopy of Southern Mahogany and Saw Banksia ","First sighted by David McKenzie on 23/3/2003 on 4WD track near Bemm River. Subsequently confirmed by Joy Johnstone ( BOCA ) and myself today. Seen on Fletch's Stretch GR 701186 Murrungowar - Bemm River Map 8622 - N 1:50,000, thanks Len Axen.

23 March
3 Swift Parrots in bush near the southern end of the Paddy's Ranges Park (approx 10 km south of Maryborough), thanks Jack Flack.

23 March
Swift Parrots were seen making use of the newly proclaimed Greater Bendigo National Park (15 kms south of Bendigo) along with with Musk and Little Lorikeets and Black-chinned, Fuscous and Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, thanks Chris Tzaros.

22 March
200 Long-billed Corella in large circling flock, over Brooklyn Road, Melton South, thanks Micah Kawalek.

22 March
A White-bellied Sea-eagle seen perched on a branch atop a drowned tree in the Old Tanjil Pool area of Blue Rock Lake about 20 kms north west of Moe, thanks Damien Cooney.

22 March
2 Swift Parrots seen feeding on flowering grey box in the Brynterion State Forest, south of Rupanyup, thanks Ian Morgan.

3 Rainbow Bee-eaters were seen at the You Yangs Regional Park, 200 metres north-west of park office, thanks Micah Kawalek.

A Swift Parrot was seen near the intersection of Park St (near Brunswick Rd) and Royal Parade in Parkville/Brunswick, thanks Tim Dolby

20 March
3 Swift Parrots flying low (10m) over the Reservoir Rotary Village Hostel, Elliot Street, Reservoir, thanks Charles Silviera.

20 March
At least 1 Swift Parrot was heard along Heidelberg Road, between Yarra Bend Road and the Merri Creek - Clifton Hill, thanks Lawrie Conole.

19 March
2 Fork-tailed Swifts, maybe part of a larger group, heading north-east only 20 metres above the ground at Bradley Street, Thornbury, thanks Paul Peake.

19 March
5 White-throated Needletails seen over Kurrajong Crescent, Melton South, thanks Micah Kawalek.

19 March
3 Fork-tailed Swifts were seen over Westgate Park, Fisherman's Bend, late yesterday. They were heading North and moving quite slowly against the gale, thanks Alan Flack.

A Peregrine Flacon was seen on a Flemington building, near Moonee Ponds Creek, thanks Alan Flack.

16 March
Highlights of the monthly Port Fairy Pelagic this month include 7 Wandering and 1 Buller's Albatross, an early Great Skua and Pomarine and Arctic Jaegers, thanks Mike Carter

16 March
Good views of a single clearly identifiable Lewin's Rail at the edge of the water close to some reeds at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens, Wylie's Creek Wetland, thanks Margaret and Richard Alcorn.

16 March
A Black Falcon was seen at Tower Hill after the Pelagic Trip, thanks Richard Loyn.

14 March
3 Common Mynas were seen in a semi-rural subdivision in Healy Road, Marlo, probably the first sighting of this species here, thanks Len Axen.

12 March
A Peregrine Falcon flew low over houses in Mitchell St Brunswick, thanks Bruce McGregor

5 March
A male Red-capped Robin was seen in Mountain Ash forest near Marysville, thanks Richard Loyn.

24 February
Australian Shelduck were seen in a grazing flock of 150 to 200, near Lethbridge, thanks Bruce McGregor.

22 January
A mixed flock of at least 10 Fork- tailed Swifts and many White-throated Needletails were seen at Angelsea, thanks Bruce McGregor.
