Alan,
According to my Japanese Field Guide (Takano, Wild Bird Soc of Japan, Massey et
al. 1982) there are no Darters normally recorded in Japan. So there is
probably not a Japanese name for it - it would be simply "Darter" and written
in Katakana like other words imported into the language. I could type out the
characters but they'd be unintelligible at the other end unless you have a
Japanese font set installed.
I imagine other birds not historically found in Japan would lack Japanese
names, so most Australian species would simply be designated by there usual
english name.
The guide listed above contains English, Latin and Japanese names for all
regular Japanese species.
