Just a small i/d problem. I saw this immature Cormorant from about 30m and the plumage - especially the dark crown extending to the base of the bill and eye - seemed right for Black-faced Cormorant. But Michael Morcombe emphasises that they have dark ear coverts. This one had a circular pale area - about 1 centimetre in diameter - around the ear amongst the dark feathers. Could it have been a Black-faced Cormorant ? Michael Norris PS Alan - it flew off towards you !
