Paul Osborn (Birding-aus 25/2/03)
asked if it would be unusual to see a Western Gerygone at Cumberland State
Forest in North-west Sydney. My answer would be yes, if would be unusual, and
because the habitat there is basically a wet sclerophyll Eucalyptus forest, in
fact if would be most unlikely. During the period 1957 to 1982, there were some
sporadic records of Western Gerygones reported in the Cumberland Plains woodland
habitats of Plumbton, Greendale and Scheyville, in the far north-west and far
western parts of the County of Cumberland (= Sydney region).
I am unaware of any Western
Gerygones being recorded in the Sydney region in recent times, however the
similar looking but not similar calling, Brown Gerygones would be resident in
the wet gullies in Cumberland SF so it is possible that there could be a
mis-identification.
