It strikes me that it would be possible to put a few Kakapo on another island where birders and other naturalists who are prepared to pay for the privilege (I'd gladly shell out $1000) could be taken to view the bird under controlled conditions.  This would be a quick way of raising a lot of money for the Kakapo program.
