This place looks like Jill Denning territory ...
Its an item from the Ramsar forum and describes the findings of a
waterbird survey somewhat to the north of here ...

Subject: [Ramsar Forum] Lower Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) basin surveys
PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF A FOUR-PROVINCE SURVEY FOR DUNLIN AND OTHER
WATERBIRDS IN THE LOWER CHANG JIANG (YANGTZE RIVER) BASIN
Two teams surveyed a selection of lakes in Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and
Anhui over a 3-week period in January 2003. The main target species was
Dunlin, but we took the opportunity to count all waterbirds seen.
Despite significant logistical problems and very foggy weather, we were
still able to find 242,000 waterbirds including:
48,000 Dunlin
12,000 Spotted Redshank
12,500 Pied Avocet
6,500 Eurasian Spoonbill (100% of estimated regional population - from
Waterbird Population Estimates Third Edition 2002)
1,362 Oriental Stork (45%)
16,300 Tundra Swan (19%)
27,100 Swan Goose (49%)
25,700 Bean Goose (22% of combined middendorffi/serrirostris
sub-species)
16,600 Lesser White-fronted Goose (118%!!)
646 Hooded Crane (65%)
Incidentally, we later saw another 105 Hooded Cranes in the Chang Jiang
estuary (Chongming Dao).
Preliminary analysis of results indicates that the region probably
holds hundreds of thousands of Dunlin during the non-breeding season.
Those interested in spreadsheets of the counts, site-by-site (with
dates/coordinates) and estimated coverage of each lake, should contact
me directly - as should those who would like
to discuss the results in more detail.
Our grateful thanks go to the US Geological Service, US Fish and
Wildlife Service and Wetlands International-Oceania for financial
support, and to the Provincial and County Forestry Administrations for
essential logistical assistance.
