G'day all
The Catchment Management Authority down this way has purchased some land
adjoining the Grange Burn (the town stream) on the outskirts of Hamilton
(sw Victoria). They are going to develop it with lakes and ponds and
manage it for environmental values (including public education). Sounds
good - at the moment it is a large wet paddock that attracts a few Cattle
Egrets in winter.
They are looking for input from local birders, field nats etc. I suggested
they have a look at the Lake Gresswell setup in Melbourne (where the Little
Bitterns have been recently). This sounds like it will be bigger than
Gresswell actually.
Can anyone give me examples of well designed bird hides - and badly
designed bird hides - in western Victoria or Melbourne that they could use
to help design hides for the new area? The only ones I could think of were
the one at Belmont Common in Geelong and the one in Port Fairy. Both of
these seem to work well.
Any other tips for developing the area to favour birds?
