Further to my message of 8/2/03 quoting the South-east Advertiser report of
Brisbane City Council approving using the Minnippi Parklands for a 160 unit
residential development plus an 18 hole golf course, I visited Minnippi
today.
The weevils have done a complete job on the Salvinia that choked the lake
only a few months ago. There are now only a very few, very close to death,
Salvinia plants left. There are a lot of water hyacinth plants however, and
unless they are removed, the lake will in time become choked again. It was
once before and it cost Council heaps to remove the hyacinth with a floating
harvester, so one hopes this time they'll act before it gets to that stage.
But if the golf course and residential development proceed, much of the
area's environmental value will be lost anyway.
