Over the last few days I've been surveying a few sites for work in areas
north of Melbourne. Most of these were on freehold land on the Quarry
Hills range between Epping and Mernda on Melbourne's northern edge.
Most sites are devoid of native vegetation, but some have a woodland
dominated by Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis), and others a grassy
open-forest dominated by Red Stringybark (E. macrorhyncha). I've been
mildly surprised at some of the avian diversity holding on in rather
adverse conditions - species such as Barking Owl, Speckled Warbler and
Southern Whiteface - and entertained by other great spectacles such as a
Black Falcon toying with the 30-40 knot wind blowing over the hilltops.

This morning I took some colleagues out to Woodlands Historic Park next
to Tullamarine Airport to practise some bird survey and ID techniques.
The morning there turned out pretty well too, considering that it was
very windy most of the time! Lots of birds to test their ID skills in
the Grey Box woodland - quite a few Red-capped Robins; the usual one
Black Kite; and a strident pair of Collared Sparrowhawks being amongst
the highlights. List follows:
