I notice that Handbook of the Birds of the
World,vol.3,p.373 persistsin treating Haematopus finschii as a race of
H.ostralegus.
On zoogeographical grounds, this is extremely
unlikely. Is this another example of the careless lumping characteristic
of the Peters era, and largely due to the influence of Ernst Mayr? What
evidence is there?
I could find nothing on finschi in NCBI, although
there is a complete (unpublished) cytochrome-b sequence for
H.ostralegus.
HANZAB treats it as a distinct species, but apart
from saying "Otfen treated as a race of H.ostralegus" has buggar all to say on
the issue.
Cheers,
John
