I just received a report of a probable White Wagtail seen at the end of
Challis Road at Augusta in the far south west of WA on 10th January
2003. The observer was Bill Barker from Jersey in the UK.
Not many details, but he knows White Wagtail very well from Jersey. The
few details that I am aware of were black head, white face, white
underbelly, white chin, grey back, black tail with white edges.
Is this sufficient to confirm ID as a White Wagtail, or could it still have
been a Black-backed Wagtail? I haven't seen either species, and I didn't
have a field guide handy when I was talking to him. He made no mention of
any black on the breast, but he didn't volunteer much of the information,
but rather expanded on the information as I asked him questions.
