Fires

I was thinking along those lines myself. The Canberra fire seems to have been far more intense than those afflicting urban areas in recent times - I can't remember pictures of fire zones extending that far into suburbia before [normally they just burn the houses adjacent to the bushland].

I'm not sure whether the intensity is due to
1. the pine plantations
2. the drought
3. the weather conditions at the time of the fire

Yes, I think some of the forthcoming extinctions in Australia will come as a result of climate change influenced bushfires. Given that we are on a drying and heating trend, we can expect more fires like this, and as habitats become progressively fragmented, individual populations will be wiped out. I have certainly noticed a fair bit of burning in eastern bristlebird habitat over the last year or so.
