Trent's rationalist argument can get on dangerous ground. Does the CO2
generated by twitchers driving 100's of kms to tick one bird outweigh the
value of that tick for society? While acknowledging the concern of many
bird lovers at the thought of ducks being shot (cf being eaten alive by a
fox or starving etc) and environmental impacts of lead, I think society has
to have some freedom for individual preferences that may not be profitable
to society or chosen by the majority.
I absolutely agree that in present conditions it would be quite
inappropriate for Victoria to have a duck season this year.
Here's to mud for ducks and farmers.
